Leave a pimple patch on for about 6 to 8 hours, or overnight, then swap it once the centre has turned white or cloudy. For Dododots patches, we recommend at least 6 to 8 hours. Follow the time on your own pack first, and never stick a used patch back on.
New to patches? Our beginner guide to pimple patches covers what they are and how to put one on.
How long should a pimple patch stay on?
Most guidance says 6 to 8 hours or overnight. Dr. Danielle Perna of Maitland Dermatology (Oct 2026) gives that range, and The Conversation (Sep 2026) says to swap once the centre looks cloudy and swollen. Packs differ, so the time printed on yours wins, and a patch can come off sooner if it lifts or fills up.
Here's how the main sources compare.
| Source (date) | Wear time given | When to swap |
|---|---|---|
| Maitland Dermatology (12 Oct 2026) | 6 to 8 hours or overnight | When most of the patch has turned white |
| The Conversation (Sep 2026) | About 6 to 8 hours or overnight | When the centre turns cloudy and swollen |
| Mentholatum Acnes Day & Night pack, Malaysia (checked 20 Oct 2026) | Up to 12 hours | When it turns white or after 12 hours |
| Dododots (our guidance, Oct 2026) | At least 6 to 8 hours | When the centre turns white or the edges lift |
| Watsons Acne Patch, Malaysia (checked 20 Oct 2026) | Not stated | When it turns white |
Best for: most people, a patch at bedtime and a fresh one in the morning if the spot still needs cover.
When should you change a pimple patch?
Change a pimple patch when the centre has gone white or puffy, when the edges start lifting, or when you hit the time on the pack. A full patch can't take up much more fluid. A lifting patch lets dirt and fingers back in, so it's no longer doing its second job of covering the spot.
Use this quick mirror check:
- Look at the centre. White, cloudy or raised means it has absorbed fluid. Swap it.
- Press the edges. If they peel up on their own, swap it.
- Check the clock. Past the time on your pack? Swap it.
- Still clear and flat? Leave it until the pack time, then take it off.
What does it mean when a pimple patch turns white?
A white or cloudy centre means the gel has taken up fluid from the spot. Maitland Dermatology (Oct 2026) says this is the sign it's absorbing, and to replace it once most of the patch has turned. It doesn't measure how the spot is doing, it just tells you the patch is full.
If the patch stays clear all night, the spot probably didn't have a head yet. Plain patches mostly work on open spots or spots with a visible head, so a deep, sore bump may not change much.
Can you leave a pimple patch on overnight?
Yes, overnight is the most common way to wear one, since you're less likely to touch your face and there's no makeup in the way. Put it on clean, dry skin before bed and peel it off slowly in the morning. If your pack lists a maximum time shorter than your sleep, follow the pack.
Sleeping on your side can rub a patch loose. If you wake up and it's on the pillow, put a fresh one on rather than pressing the old one back down.
Can you leave a pimple patch on for 24 hours?
We don't suggest it unless your pack says so. Most guidance stops at 6 to 8 hours or overnight, and the longest time we found on a pack sold in Malaysia was 12 hours (Mentholatum Acnes, checked Oct 2026). After a full day, the patch is usually full, lifting or both.
If you're wondering how long to leave a pimple patch on past bedtime, the answer is: swap in a fresh one. Give the skin a short break first if it looks red or feels itchy.
Can you reuse a pimple patch?
No, a pimple patch is single-use. The Watsons Acne Patch pack says each patch is for one use only, and to avoid peeling it off and sticking it back. Once you peel it, the edges won't hold, and anything it absorbed is sitting right on your skin again.
Bin it, wash your hands and use a new one. A fresh patch costs a few cents. A dirty one isn't worth it.
How many patches does one spot need?
Most spots with a head need one to three patches over a day or two. That's based on wear times of 6 to 8 hours and on the hub trials, where covered spots looked calmer within one to two days. If a spot hasn't changed after a few days, a patch probably isn't the right tool for it.
For deep spots that keep coming back, it's worth seeing a doctor or pharmacist. Patches cover one spot at a time and don't stop new ones forming.
Which Dododots packs suit a day and night routine?
Any size that covers the spot works at night. In the day, a clear or skin-tone patch is easier under makeup, and a decorated one is for when you want it seen. Our design patches are hydrocolloid, and we recommend at least 6 to 8 hours per patch (sizes and prices checked 20 Oct 2026).

The Watsons listing for Dodostar says to swap our patch once it has absorbed sebum and loses its grip, and notes our patches aren't sweatproof or waterproof. So after the gym or a swim, change it. See the full range or where to buy in Malaysia.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you leave a pimple patch on?
Leave it on for about 6 to 8 hours, or overnight, and swap it once the centre turns white. That's the range Maitland Dermatology (Oct 2026) and The Conversation (Sep 2026) give.
Some packs sold in Malaysia allow up to 12 hours, so check the time printed on yours. Take it off sooner if the edges lift, if it fills up early, or if the skin under it feels itchy or sore.
Is it bad to leave a pimple patch on too long?
Usually it just stops being useful. A full or lifting patch can't take up more fluid and doesn't cover the spot well, so there's little point keeping it on.
Long wear can also leave the skin soft, wrinkly or red under the patch, and some people react to the adhesive. If you see a red ring or feel itching, take it off and give the area a break before trying again.
Why didn't my pimple patch turn white?
It most likely means there wasn't fluid near the surface for the patch to take up. That happens with blind pimples, the deep bumps with no head, and with spots that are already drying out.
A clear patch isn't a faulty patch, it still kept fingers off the spot. Our patch types guide covers options for early bumps. If the spot comes to a head later, a fresh patch then has more to work with.
Can I shower with a pimple patch on?
You can, but many patches loosen with water and steam, and the Watsons listing for Dododots says our patches aren't waterproof. Showering with one on often means it lifts at the edges.
It's easier to shower first, pat the area fully dry and then put on a fresh patch. If one gets wet anyway and starts peeling, swap it rather than pressing it back down.
Should I pop a pimple before putting a patch on?
No. Cleveland Clinic advises against picking or popping, as it can leave marks. Put the patch on the spot as it is, and let the patch do the covering.
If a spot has already opened by itself, clean the area gently, dry it and then patch it. Maitland Dermatology (Oct 2026) also warns against squeezing to "get it ready" for a patch.
Can I put a new patch on straight after taking one off?
Yes, if the spot still needs cover and the skin looks fine. Peel the old one slowly, clean the area gently, pat it dry and stick on a fresh one.
If the skin looks red, puffy or feels itchy, give it a few hours without a patch first. That pause helps you tell whether the adhesive is bothering you.
Quick recap
- Wear a patch about 6 to 8 hours or overnight, unless your pack says otherwise.
- Swap it when it's white, lifting or past the pack time.
- A clear patch in the morning usually means the spot had no head yet.
- Never reuse a patch. Bin it and use a fresh one.
- Change it after sweating, swimming or showering.
